ORPHANS

Nigeria is the most populated country on the African continent. An exact figure is difficult to come by given the high mortality rate due to HIV, but there are approximately 158 million inhabitants in Nigeria.

This series of photographs is about the children who form part of this population. Children who are abandoned at the drop of a hat just like children in many other so-called third world countries. From a very young age, they find themselves working and exploited in precarious conditions. Many never go to school but adoption centres and orphanages give them the chance to gain an education as well as giving them a place to eat and sleep.
